Save the date for KICK's winter Tea Party on Saturday, February 18, 2012
The Tea Party is a quarterly fundraiser that benefits our family, friends and community. This quarterly event provides funds for the free programs and services offered by KICK: Receive & Restore, our health and wellness campaign, Learn & Live, our weekly educational seminars, and Help & Heal, our faith based support group for HIV positive African-American men. The winter Tea Party will be held at the Woodward Cocktail Bar & Grill in Detroit's historical automobile industry district, Milwaukee Junction. The evening begins at 3:00 pm and ends at 8:00 pm. Admittance is $10 (and additional donations are welcomed).
The Tea Party allows for a fun and lively gathering of friends who support KICK's education and advocacy programs. Seven tea parties have been hosted since November 2009 and our goal is raise over $5,000 in 2012. The term Tea Party (or sometimes referred to as a T-dance or soiree) was commonly used within LGBT culture to describe Sunday evening gatherings in nightclubs or at the end of the day at gay resorts. "In LGBT culture tea dances were a common activity in the late 60s and 70s as a place for safe love and expression," says executive director Curtis Lipscomb. "Most were held in private homes and allied nightclubs. And, most commonly occurred during Sunday afternoons." KICK - The Agency for LGBT African Americans is a member supported Michigan non-profit.
