Detroit LGBT Community Organizations launch the video "Healing Detroit: Forwarding The LGBT Movement."

Detroit – Healing Detroit, a collective of LGBT organizations, releases the video "Healing Detroit: Forwarding The LGBT Movement."

"Healing Detroit: Forwarding The LGBT Movement" highlights the efforts of an inspired community to nurture collective works to overcome oppression in the City of Detroit. Distribution of the video is focused on Healing Detroit partner and ally websites. The video will also be introduced through social networking websites such as YouTube and Twitter. Support for the video is provided by Kalamazoo, Michigan-based Arcus Foundation.

The video features noted local LGBT residents such as Dr. Kofi Adoma, Phil Pugh & Mike Petross, Alicia Skillman, Curtis Lipscomb, Glenda Wyatt-Franklin, Cornelius Wilson, Robert Tate, Johnny L. Jenkins, Jr. and John Trimble. Kelsey Vaughn Thomas produced music in the video "A-Train to Detroit" by The Bloody Stars. The Detroit consultation firm DexDesign & Associates, Inc. produced recorded and edited the 3-minute video. Johnny L. Jenkins Jr and Curtis Lipscomb provided additional creative direction, and Walter J. Houston III interviewed the participants.

"What is wonderful about the video is that it identifies key LGBT institutions within Detroit such as 'Hotter Than July', 'Men of Color Motivational Group', 'SPICE' and 'Kick Publishing Company'", says Curtis Lipscomb, co-project manager of Healing Detroit. "The video captures the inspiration, struggle and perseverance for identification and equality within Detroit's equality and racial justice movements."

Healing Detroit is an African-American LGBT initiative developed to address barriers and social constraints that have impacted the growth and development of Detroit's African-American LGBT community. Since 2008, Healing Detroit has provided a space for collaboration, institutional and individual conflict resolution, and long term-strategic planning related to youth, elder and spirituality communities. More summits and activities and will occur in 2012.

Organizational partners within Healing Detroit include Affirmations Gay & Lesbian Center, Agape Spirit Life Ministries, Black Pride Society, Equality Michigan, KICK - The Agency for LGBT African-Americans | The Center In Detroit, Midwest AIDS Coalition, Poor Man's Art Collective, Ruth Ellis Center, SPICE (Sistahs Providing Intelligence Creativity and Empowerment) and Whosoever Ministries, Inc.
